Love
“Fascination with horses predated every other single thing I knew. Before I was a mother, before I was a writer, before I knew the facts of life, before I was a schoolgirl, before I learned to read, I wanted a horse.”
This is a quote from one of Jane Smiley’s books, and it’s always stuck with me because it was me.
Last summer I was photographing a local horse show when I noticed this little girl grazing her pony after she’d finished her classes. She was oblivious to anyone around her, and she kept a running commentary going about their day in between giving him hugs. I couldn’t quite hear what she was saying, but I could see the love she had for him, and it went well beyond the ribbons they’d won that day.
She was me a very long time ago, and it was touching to see that even with all of the changes in our world over the past three decades, a love for horses can still rise above all else.
